A new type of poisonous snake belonging to a forest mule has been found on Bioko Island, a volcanic island in the western Gulf of Guinea. The island is also famous for its location in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea.
According to the latest issue of the International Journal of Animal Classification (Zootaxa), the new snake was named Atheris heftfieldi after James Hittfield, the leader of the heavy metal band Metallica.
This is because Dr. Luis Seriano, a reptilian curator at the National Museum of Natural History at Lisbon University in Portugal, who led the study, saw the snake’s prickly scales and dragon-like appearance and thought of Metallica.
In addition, it is the first time in more than 100 years that a new species of snake has been discovered on the island, and it is also the first time that the species has been recognized as an indigenous species on the island.
